Background Information

CUSU has produced a number of reports on the rent issue. These can be found on the CUSU rents campaign site. This site also contains these items:

• The original Bursar's report (January 1997) and a more recent report.
• CUSU's Response: The Cost of Studying at the University of Cambridge 2/3/99.
• 29/9/99 - report showing that Cambridge University is set to become the most expensive university outside London.

There are also many general articles from Varsity. Two particularly relevant ones are Bursar Under The Spotlight and the CUSU response to this article. Varsity have also produced the Rents Fact File.

The Rents Issue has been raised in Parliament. Diane Abbott MP has tabled an Early Day Motion, drawing attention to the issue. This has been reported in both The Cambridge Student and Varsity. The actual text of the motion can be found here and the amendment to the motion is here.

The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) has produced a number of relevant press releases. Two of these are:

• Advice to the DfEE on the future of college fee funding for Oxford and Cambridge Universities.
• Advice on Oxford and Cambridge college fees accepted.

Many articles have been written on the subject of inefficiency and mismanagement at Oxbridge colleges. One such article is Oxbridge colleges 'waste £10m a year', from The Telegraph.
